CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION IN WW1

George Mearns

Oldham Tribunal 8 March 1916
Reported Oldham Chronicle 11 March 1916

More claims for exemption from service on the ground of a conscientious objection against service were heard before the Oldham Tribunal on Wednesday ….

…. His employer appealed for exemption for George Mearns, a moulder, who is living at 119 Brewerton-road.
As he is in a certified occupation, he is exempt but he desired to explain the grounds of his conscientious objection against service.

The Mayor: Do you want to make a speech?
- I want to make my position clear.

Exemption conditional on the man's remaining in his present occupation was granted.
