At the general election, which occurred at the close of July and the beginning of August, 1847, John Duncuft and William Johnson Fox, Esqrs., were elected the members for Oldham, on Friday, the 30th of July, The nomination took place on Thursday, the 29th of July, in Town Hall place, when four candidates were proposed, namely: John Fielden, Esq., the late member; John Cobbett, Esq., barrister, of London, a former candidate ; Wm. J. Fox, Esq., a celebrated political lecturer, of London; and John Duncuft, Esq., J .P., of Westwood house, a native and inhabitant of the town. The numbers at the close of the poll, which was taken on the 30th of July, were as follows : W. J. Fox, 723; J. Duncuft, 692; J. Cobbett, 624; J. Fielden, 612.
