in order to resist an alleged abatement in their earnings. The strike of the miners terminated in the latter end of the ensuing month of March, the workmen acceding to the employers' terms; but the turnout of the hatters did not etfectually cease till about the middle of May, when they were obliged to assent to the scale of prices they had been vainly opposing for several months.

A shipwreck, which occurred on the Atlantic ocean in 1841, produced a sensation in this district, which will be felt for a considerable period. Whilst the "Governor Fenner" ship was on its passage from Liverpool to America., with a large number of emigrants from various parts of the empire on board, it was wrecked on the 20th of February, and about eighty lives lost, of whom twelve individuals were from Oldham and its Vicinity.

During the years 1835, 1836, and 1837, the cotton trade appears to have been comparatively flourishing, for the following seven new factories were built in that interval : Park mill, North moor, Messrs. Rowland; North street mill, Messrs. Holladay and Newland; Albion mill, Mr. George Emmett; Mumps mill, Mr. Abraham Clegg; Primrose mill, Mr. John Lees; New Breck mill, Hill, Messrs. Brideoake; and Newearth mill, Messrs. Lees and Bottomley. At this period one old mill was renewed, one discontinued, and eight of the existing establishments considerably enlarged. From 1837 to 1840, two additional mills were erected, namely, Moor hey mill, Messrs. Cheetham and Wlright ; and Horsedge mill, Mr. George Emmett. The number of cotton factories in the township of Oldham, in 1841 regarding each manufactory as a single mill, was 59, exclusive of extinct and unoccupied mills; but the number of cotton factories, taking the number in detail, within those limits at the same period, was 75.
