mule and other spindles was 30,000, and of power-looms 435. The moving power of this large concern consists of four steam engines, whose aggregate force is equal to that of 160 horses. In 1830 Messrs. Lees, of Green bank mill, employed about 100 adult operatives; but in 1846, previous to which time the factory there had been greatly enlarged by James Lees, Esq., the present possessor, the total number of operatives employed was 550. The number of mule and other spindles at the latter period was 47,000 and power-looms 339. The aggregate power of the two steam engines engaged in this concern alone was equal to that of 110 horses. In 1833-1834, Mr. Andrew Ashton erected the mill at Lower moor, now possessed by N. P. and H. Nathan, who in 1846 employed 212 hands, and worked 14,000 mule spindles, and 216 power-looms. In 1833-1834, Mr. James Tattersall, once a partner with Messrs. Wainwright, of King street, erected Bent or West hill mill, Whitehead lane, which in 1846 was occupied by the owner and other parties. In 1846 Mr. Tattersall employed 120 hands, and possessed 21,000 mule spindles. In 1834 Messrs. Rowland, of Orleans mill, erected Park mill, Maygate lane, North moor. In 1846 the total number of hands employed by ·Messrs. Rowland was about 400. In 1835 three additional mills were erected, namely, Moor hey, Side of moor, Messrs. James Cheetham, now of Firwood mill, Chadderton, and Edward Abbott Wright, of Greenhill, Glodwick; Albion mill, Radcliffe street; Lower Horsedge, Mr. George Emmett ; and North street mill, Royton street, Messrs. James Holladay, now of Portland house, and David Newland, once of Rochdale, and also of Bent grange.

Associations of the working classes for the professed purpose of protecting wages were extremely popular in both the manufacturing and agricultural districts in 1834. During the month of April that year, a dispute prevailed betwixt Mr. Thompson, of Bankside mill,
