period the following proportions of qualifying tenements or properties worth £10 per annum or upwards, in the several townships of the borough: Oldham, houses 1018, warehouses 44, factories or mills 66, total 1128 ; Crompton, houses and land 151, houses 54, factories 14, total 219; Royton, houses 84, houses and land 36, factories 13, total 133 ; Chadderton, houses and land, 143, houses 11, factories 2, total 156; Borough, houses 1167, houses and land 330, factories or mills 95, warehouses 44, total qualifying properties, 1636. The amount of assessed taxes paid by the township of Oldham in 1831, was £2000; Ashton town, £1400; Rochdale town, £3100 ; Bury, .£2200. The amount of house and window taxes paid by Oldham township in 1832, was £1082; Ashton, £925 ; Rochdale, £1939; Bury, £l348. The amount of property taxes paid by Oldham in 1832, was £66; Ashton, £60; Rochdale, £145 ; Bury, £80. In the memorial of the inhabitants of Crompton, Royton, and Chadderton, requesting inclusion within the borough, it was stated that the population of those townships in 1831 amounted to 18,132 persons; that there were 30 large cotton manufactories and 17 collieries, together giving employment to 3319 persons; that the poors' rates for the preceding year amounted to £3152 12s. 6d., exclusive of church and highway rates; that the county rate amounted to £685 10s.; that there were 3250 houses, and that of these there were 551 houses of the value of £10 per annum and upwards. In the overseers' lists of electors, which appeared in July, 1832, the numbers of the constituency were as follow: Oldham, 809, Crompton, 155, Royton, 110, Chadderton, 105 ; total, 1179. Early in the month of August following, George R. Marton, Esq., high sheriff of Lancashire, appointed Joseph Jones, junr., Esq., of Wallshaw house, the first returning officer for the borough of Oldham. During the same month, active steps were taken to bring forward several candidates for the representation of the borough. The radical reformers invited John Fielden,
