named period was 944. Mr. John Lees, previously noticed, erected the first portion of Greenbank mill, in 1816-1817.
Messrs. Benjamin Taylor, John Scholes, and Daniel Broadbent erected the cotton mill called Vineyard mill about 1813. The cotton mills of Shaw factory, King street, Shore, and Croft bank, were considerably enlarged from 1811 to 1816. Owing to eight of the old cotton mills having ceased to exist previous to 1815, the real number of cotton mills in operation in the township of Oldham in 1821, exclusive of small temporary concerns, twining rooms, &c., was 31. So late as 1815 a few of the cotton manfactories were worked by water power, and the last cotton mill moved by horse power, which was at Glodwick, was not discontinued till 1815.
The population of the township of Oldham in 1821 was 21,662, Crompton, 6482, Chadderton, 5I24, and Royton, 4933. The aggregate population of t.hc four townships at this period was 38,201. The increase per cent. of the population of Oldham township from 1811 to 1821, was 291/8. The population of the town in 1821, exclusive of Greenacres moor and North moor, was about 7320, and inclusive of these suburbs about 11,000. The population of Ashton-under-Lyne parish in 1821 was 25,967, town, 9222; Rochdale parish, 47,109, town, 16,0D0; Bury parish, 34,335, town. 9500; Bolton-le-moors parish, 50,197, town, 28,000; Preston parish, 27,300, town, 23,000; Blackburn parish, 53,350, town, 20,000; Manchester parish, 187,031, town, 149,776.
In 1821 all the symptoms of returning prosperity began to display themselves, the great body of the people became contented with their condition so long as trade continued flourishing. new cotton manufactories and dwelling houses rapidly increased, and various projects For improving the town were proposed.
