cotton trade of Great Britain did not exceed £600,000 for the raw materials, combined with the labour of the people; and at that period, before the introduction of the water and horse machinery and hand engines, the power of the single wheel could not exceed 50,000 spindles employed in spinning the cotton wool into yarn." The number of spinners and weavers then employed in the manufacturing district around Manchester is stated by Mr. Arthur Young in 1770 to have been 50,000. The wages of weavers were at that time about 8s. per week upon an average, female cotton spinners about 3s.6d. per week, and cotton winders' and spinners' assistants, girls from six to twelve years of age, ls. to ls. 6d. per week. "The hands never worked six days in a week, numbers not five nor even four; a good deal of idle time was spent at ale houses, and places of low diversion; the remainder of their time was of little value, but a man who attended to his loom regularly performed his work much better, and did more of it than one who idled away half his time, and especially in drunkenness. Some of the poor, who were industrious to the utmost, suffered in consequence of the high price of provisions, but, notwithstanding that, few of them were chargeable to the parish, as all the children were generally workers."

The woollen manufacture continued to prevail to a small extent. long after the cotton manufacture had become the principal trade of the locality. The following is a list of a number of the woollen manufacturers who carried on business from 1762 to 1792: Miles Greaves, Spade croft, near Shaw; John Wylde, Beal hey; Amos Ogden, Lowside; Adam Whitworth, Royton; Enos and James Garside, Millbrow, Waterhead mill; James Lees, Count hill; Enos Garside, Watersheddings; John Lees, Thorp lane, Royton; James Mayall, Greenacres; James Chadwick, Whitegate, Chadderton; John Mayall, Welli hole; Daniel Taylor, Roundthorn ; Joseph Garside, Waterhead mill;
