land near Rhodes's, in 1713. Jonathan Mellor, Esq., J .P., of Hope House, King-street, Oldham, and of Failsworth, near Manchester, who died June 13, 1849, was apparently a descendant of the Mellors, of Sholver. Stampstone and Lower House were originally the habitations of the Milnes. John Milne, gentleman, of Oldham, was of Oldham, in 1486. Samuel Milne, yeoman, living in 1681, was resident at Lower House. In 1725, the family was represented by Abraham and Joseph Milne, and in 1752 by Mr. Richard Milne, of Stampstone, and Mr. Joseph Milne, of Lower House. Stampstone is now the property of William Jones, Esq., of Oldham, and Lower House, of Joseph Jones, Esq., of Severn Stoke. Hopkin Fold, a group of houses in the vicinity of Lower-moor, afforded a. residence and name to the ancient family of Hopkins. Robert Hopkin, held a messuage from the Oudworths, in 1483. A William Hopkin, of Hopkin-fold, is mentioned in 1681; but in 1735, the property was possessed by Joseph Bury, yeoman. The descendants of the Hopkins were living in Oldham, a few years ago, and Robert William Hopkins, Esq., solicitor, of Preston, acting clerk of the crown for the county palatine, was of this family. In the journal of John Nelson, the eminent Methodist minister, it is stated that he preached at Hopkin-pit (near Hopkin-fold) in the early days of Wesleyanism. Pit Bank, an adjacent place, formerly consisted of two estates held by the Buckleys and the Leeses. In 1702, a Mr. Buckley was resident here, and in 1725, Robert Lees, yeoman, was one of the possessors. There was an Edmund Leghes, yeoman, of Oldham, as early as 1486. The Leeses, of Pit-bank, were relatives of the Leeses of Barrowshaw. Samuel Lees, yeoman, held lands in Oldham in 1688. Robert Lees, yeoman, of Pit-bank, living 1747, appears to have been the father of John Lees, Esq., also of Pit-bank, who died September 18, 1797, and devised bequests of £600 each, to at least eight nephews and one niece, the sons and daughter of his brother and
