1761, and was ancestor of the late John Duncuft, Esq., of Collier-hill, Hollinwood, of the firm of Messrs. Lees, Jones, Duncuft, and Co., colliery proprietors, who died October 10, 1828, and was father-in-law of John Worthington, Esq., of Collier-hill, and uncle of the late John Duncuft, Esq., M.P., of Westwood House.
Hollins was as early as 1681 the residence of John Ogden, yeoman. In 1725, there was a John Ogden, yeoman, of Copster-hill. The late James Ogden, Esq., resided at Oak House, Hollins, which is still the residence of his family. The family of Wright, was resident at Hollins, in 1683. Robert Wright, hat manufacturer, was resident here in 1825.
Block Lane was, from 1747 to 1761, if not later, the residence of a Rev. Mr. Gee. Upper Cowhill, was the abode of the Chaddertons, who were represented by Thomas Chadderton, yeoman, in 1752. Kennittis, adjacent to the Chamber Hall estate, seems to have been the property held by a Mr. Wroe, in 1688. The Wroes were connected as lessees with the Wrigleys, of Chamber Hall. Broadway Lane contained the dwelling of the Walkers. James Walker, yeoman, living in 1747, was a near relative to Mr. John Walker, of Manchester, the benefactor of Oldham. In 1713, a Mr. Hall held lands at this place, apparently the ancestor of Dr. George Hall, of Fog-lane, living 1752. Jackson Pit, a spot adjacent to George-street, received its name from the Jacksons, an ancient family. Adam Jackson, held lands near School-croft, in 1606. Knott Fold, was the original tenement of the family of the same name. Samuel Knott, the first of the name which occurs in the local records, was living in 1688. Harry Fold, a few old low houses, near the street, now called Shudehill, was the residence of a Rev. Mr. Walmsley, in 1755, who, in 1747, was possessed of the estate of Pryors.
