Oldham is a township, market town, ancient parochial chapelry, modern parish, and parliamentary borough, in the parish of Prestwich-cum-Oldham, the division of Oldham, the hundred of Salford, and the county palatine of Lancaster, or Lancashire. Ecclesiastically considered the parish is comprehended within thc limits of the present diocese of Chester, the archdeaconryand deanery of Manchester, and the archidiaconal visitation district of Rochdale. With respect to its civil jurisdiction the townships of Oldham, Crompton and Royton are situated within the ducal manor of Salford, and the township of Chadderton within the honor of Clitheroe, and the factitious manor of Tottington. - These four townships are wholly included in the polling district, nominal poor law union, court of requests district, and the Salford hundred court of record district of Oldham.

The town of Oldham is seated on an eminence, in longitude 2 8, and latitude 53 30, at the distance of 6 1/2 miles N.E. of Manchester, 42 1/2 (by highway) and 38 (by railway) E.N.E. of Liverpool, 57 1/2 (by highway) S.S.E. of Lancaster, 190 N.N.W. of London, 5 1/2 S.S.E. of rochdale, 4 N. of Ashton-under-Lyne, 17
