1st/7th Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)

Newspaper obituary:

"Private Joseph Maher, West Riding Regiment, of 3 Back Bentley Street, Oldham, was killed in action on July 4th. He was 23 years of age. He joined the Territorials six years ago and had finished the time for which he signed when he was killed. He was previously an oiler and bander at the Derker Mill. His sister has received the following letter from Lieutenant Cloudesley Mallalieu:

It is with feelings of deep regret that I have to give you bad news of your brother Private Maher. He was killed in action on the evening of the fourth of this month. Please accept the deepest sympathy of myself, brother officers, and men in your great bereavement. His death was instantaneous, so you can rest assured he did not suffer in any way. He was buried on the 5th in a grave just behind the firing line, and a board suitably engraved will be placed over him as soon as ever possible. I can only say how sorry we all are to lose him. He was a good soldier in every way, well liked by all ranks."
