Newspaper obituary:

"Private William Alfred Aldred (12367) King’s Royal Rifles, whose home is at 32 Priory Square, Street, Oldham, was killed in action on July 9th. He was 20 years of age, and was a weaver for Messrs J. Stott Ltd., Werneth. He had been on active service for ten weeks, and left for the firing-line five weeks ago. He was hit in the head."


William had enlisted in the 5th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps (no. 12567, not '12367' as reported) in May 1915. He landed in France 12 months later, on the 19th May 1916. On the 6th June 1916, he joined the 1st Battalion.
The 1st battalion was in the 2nd Dvision, in the XIII Corps, on the Somme.
