Newspaper obituary:

"Bandsman George Hardy Whalley, Lancashire Fusiliers, was killed in action on July 24th. His home was 16 Brown Street, Failsworth, and he was 21 years of age, and prior to becoming a soldier was a spreader at Ferguson's India rubber works, Hollinwood.

He had been a drummer in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Boy's Brigade band. His parents have had a letter from Second-Lieutenant C. J. Lever saying that deceased was instantly killed

He was a good soldier, and one of the best stretcher bearers. My brother officers and I and your son's comrades wish you to know how much we shall miss him, and we tender to you our sincere sympathy in your great loss.

Mr and Mrs Whalley have another son in the army. "
