Private Seth Shaw, 7/2118
Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) "D" Coy. 1st/7th Bn
Newspaper obituary:
"Mrs Shaw of St. John Street, Hey, wife of Private Seth Shaw, of the West Riding Regiment, has received the following letter from Sergeant Ernest Shaw, of the same company:
I am very sorry to inform you of the death of your husband, Private Seth Shaw. He being in the same company and in the same platoon as myself and coming from the same village and knowing him very well before the war broke out, I thought it would be as well just to drop you a line or two concerning his death. He was killed through an accident, whilst digging in the trenches. He struck a bomb with his pick, with that result that the explosion killed him outright, also wounding a lance-corporal who was digging with him. It was a pure accident. There is one consolation: death was instantaneous, and he could not have suffered any pain. He was a very good lad, and a good soldier, and always did everything willingly. He will be greatly missed by every one who knew him, as he was very well liked by everyone in the company.
Mrs Shaw has also received a letter from Captain R. C. Chambley, expressing his deepest sympathy and that of his brother officers and comrades.
Shaw was killed on the 21st July, and was buried just behind the firing line and a suitable inscription has been placed over his grave. He was 26 years of age, and joined the army in November 1914, being previously a moulder for Messrs Asa lees and Co., Oldham. "
