"Mrs B Quinn, 15 Lodge Street, Oldham, has received official word that her son, Private William Quinn (2293), King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, died of wounds on July 27th at the 2nd Stationary Hospital, Abberville, France.
She has also received the following letter from a sister at the hospital:
Dear Mrs Quinn, - It is with deepest regret that I am writing to tell you that your son, Private W. Quinn, passed peacefully away at 4am on the morning of the 27th. He was mercifully spared any suffering, but the wound in the head was so severe as to render him beyond human aid. He was fortified by the rites of the church. Your grief will at present seem too great to be borne, but you must be proud of a son who has fought and died so nobly for us. He was not conscious, so I was unable to get any message for you.
Private Quinn had been in the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment for six months before the war, and before then was employed as a moulder at Messrs Platt Brothers. Works. He was 20 years of age. "
