Newspaper obituary:

"The sister of Private J. J. Hilton (18045), Lancashire Fusiliers, of 70 Sandy Lane, Royton, has been informed that he has been killed in action. She has received the following letter, dated July 25, from the Rev. H. Rosker, chaplain to the forces in France:

Dear Miss Hilton, - It is with deepest regret that I write to tell you that your brother Private Hilton, Lancashire Fusiliers, was killed by a bursting shell on Saturday, July 22nd. He died instantaneously and was buried in the little burial ground at… .A cross marks his grave. I need hardly say how deeply we sympathise with you all in your distress. Your brother was a promising soldier and a good comrade and respected by all…

Private Hilton, was 32 years of age was well known and respected in Royton. He was a widower with two children, and before enlisting, since the outbreak of war, was an electrician's labourer and worked for Messrs Mather and Platt."
