Newspaper obituary:

"Private Joseph Critchley (17044), East Lancashire Regiment, was killed in action on July 15.

He was 23 years of age, resided at 178 Radcliffe Street, Oldham, and was a piecer at Collinge's Mill, Glodwick Road, when he enlisted 18 months ago. He had been a year in France.

A letter from his platoon sergeant, A Beet, says:

He was a very willing soldier, not afraid of any duty allotted to him. We all feel the loss of him as he was the life of the platoon. He suffered no pain, death being instantaneous."
