Newspaper obituary:

"Mrs Ludlam of 120 Middleton Road, Royton, has received official notification from the Records Office at Preston that her son, Private Fred Ludlam (28449), Manchester Regiment, was killed in action on July 1st.

Ludlam joined the Army six months ago and received training with one of the Manchester reserve battalions. He was sent to the western front six weeks ago and was killed in the earliest part of the advance of the British troops. He was 20 years of age, and before joining the Army worked as a joiner minder at the Fir Spinning Company's Mill, Royton. "
