SOLDIERS IN OTHER REGIMENTS

Private Samuel Carr, 20098
Essex Regiment 9th Bn.

Newspaper obituary:

"Private Samuel Carr (20098), Essex Regiment, was killed in France on July 8th. He was 25 years of age, and his parents reside at 21 Castle Mill Street, Oldham. Prior to enlisting he worked as a steeplejack for Mr William Brown. His parents have received a letter from a comrade, Private Brocklehurst, a Bolton man, which states:

It is with a sorrowful heart that I have to tell you that your son, Sam, has been killed. I was with him an hour before his death, after the first charge, when I was talking to him…They went up to the trenches again, and I saw them come out and asked for Sam. They could not tell me for a minute or two, as Sam and I were like brothers. Then they said he had been killed in a bombing attack. They had got very near to the Huns, when Sam was hit in the chest."
