Newspaper obituary:

"Private Richard Whitlock (28409), Manchester Regiment, has been killed in action early this month. Whitlock was 20 years of age, and his father resides at 4 Bankhouse, Grains Road, Shaw. He joined the army on January 22nd this year and was sent to the front only three weeks ago. He was a piecer at Ash Mill before enlisting. A letter from his commanding officer says:

I regret to inform you that Private Whitlock was killed in action and he was buried yesterday. He died bravely. I am sorry to have to inform you of this sad event.

A letter from Private A. Franklin, Queen's Regiment, has also been received by the family, which reads:-

I am forwarding to you these cards (photos), which is the wish of the man to whom they belonged. I picked them up whilst crossing the battlefield beside a body, but not on the body. I cannot say whether they belonged to him or not. Perhaps in due course you will be informed.

The photographs referred to were the property of Private Whitlock."
