Newspaper obituary:

"Mrs Siddall, 26 Redgrave-street, Oldham, has received a letter from her son's platoon commander, Second-Lieutenant A.P. Myers, informing her of the death of her son, Signaller James Siddall (18056), King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. The letter is dated July 5th and is as follows:-

Dear Mrs Siddall, - It is my sad duty to write to you of the death of your son. He died during the attack on the regiment made the other day. Several of his comrades met the same fate. May I express to you the deep sympathy that what remains of my platoon feel for you and all those who were dear to your boy. I was always greatly attracted by the charm of your son's personality and his quiet soldierly efficiency. He was one of those we can ill afford to lose. There is no word but praise for him on all sides. I trust that pride in your son's noble sacrifice will in some degree console you in your irreparable loss.

Signaller Siddall was 18 years of age and joined the army 12 months ago last March and went to France on February 8th."
