Newspaper obituary:

"Lieutenant C. Mallalieu. Of the West Riding Regiment, has sent the following letter to Mr J Nield, Horsforth Road, Greenfield, dated July 6th:-

It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that your son, Private J. T. Nield, was killed in action on the 3rd of this month. Will you please accept the sincerest sympathy of myself and brother officers on your sad bereavement. He was on duty in the trenches when he was killed and death was instantaneous; he did not suffer in any way. He was buried on the 4th in a grave just behind the firing line and a board suitably engraved will be placed over him as soon as possible. I need hardly say how sorry we all are to lose him. He was a good soldier, always willing and cheerful and very well liked by all ranks.

When war broke out the deceased soldier was working in the office of Messrs Tanner Bros., Greenfield. He enlisted on the day he was 18, and had been in the army just over a year. He was a youth well liked throughout Greenfield, and the parents have general sympathy in their bereavement. "
