"Word has been received that Private James Heywood (27242), Manchester Regiment, has been killed in action. The information was conveyed to Miss Dora Ridgwick, of 142, Oldham Road, Shaw, Private Heywood's fiancée, in the following letter, received on Thursday from Signaller Reginald Richards (33976), Brigade Headquarters, - Division, B.E.F.:-
Dear Miss Dora, - I hope you will not take any offence at my writing this letter to you. I do not know who you are, but I am writing to ask you if you know this letter enclosed. I am very, very sorry to say that I picked this letter from the body of this soldier. If you care to answer it I will give you all particulars as far as allowed. You have my deepest sympathy.
The letter referred to (which Signaller Richards enclosed) was one which Miss Ridgwick had sent to Private Heywood.
Private Heywood lived with his parents at 41, Orchard-street, Royton. He enlisted in January last, and up to that time was employed as a joiner-minder at the Grape Mill, Royton. He was 23 years of age."
