Manchester Regiment 21st Bn.

Newspaper obituary:

"Private Albert Butterworth of one of the City Battalions of the Manchester regiment, was killed by a shell on July 8th.

He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Butterworth, of 29, Bowler-street, Shaw, and had been in the army only four months, going out to the front about six weeks ago. He had been an active member of the High Crompton Church Lads' Brigade, attaining the rank of captain in the corps, and this would account for the brief training necessary before he was sent to the fighting line. Butterworth was 20 years of age, and was a minder at Mr. John Clegg's Sandy Lane Mill. He was a member of the committee of the High Crompton Church Institute, and also on the committee of the High Crompton Sunday School. His younger brother Harry, who is only 17, is a private in the Oldham Comrades' Battalion, and has already served in the trenches for eight months. He has now been sent back to the training centre on account of his youth. A letter from Private William Seedhouse of Glebe-street, Shaw (who is in the same battalion) to his parents, includes the following reference to Butterworth:

I am sorry to tell you that Harry Butterworth's brother, Albert, was killed on Saturday. Please let his parents know."
