Newspaper obituary:

"Private Fred C Brearley, of the Royal Fusiliers, was killed by a sniper on July 3rd. He was in the machine-gun section of the Royal Fusiliers, and a comrade has sent word to his parents that he was on sentry duty when a sniper's bullet struck him and he died shortly afterwards. He joined the Public Schools Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers soon after the outbreak of war. Before enlisting he was learning the cotton-spinning business at the Gresham Mill. He was 21 years of age and was the son of Mr Joseph E Brearley, a member of the well- known skipmaking firm in Silver Street, Oldham.
