Newspaper obituary:

"Lance-Corporal Millward, Manchester Regiment, was killed in action in France on the 14th instant. He was 32 years of age and his home address was No 2 Court, Alfred Street, Werneth. He leaves a widow and three children and was a moulder at Platts before joining the army, which he did as soon as the Oldham Comrades Battalion was formed.

Mrs Millward has received the following letter from Lieutenant Swain dated July 16th:

Dear Mrs Millward, - It is my very sad duty to inform you that your husband, Lance-Corporal Millward, was killed in action on the 14th instant. He was certainly the bravest man I had and did not know the meaning of fear. I am so sorry and my deepest sympathy is with you in your great loss. My company had been called upon in an extreme emergency and your husband was killed by a shell during the action. I again assure you of my distress and heartfelt sympathy.".

He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
