THE PEACE CRUSADE IN OLDHAM - NEWSPAPER LETTERS
OLDHAM CHRONICLE
10th August 1917 (Friday)
THE PEACE MEETING
Sir, I wish to offer a protest against the disgraceful conduct of the N.Z.F.A. on Monday last. The scene in Union Street was of a most degrading character. The mad rush of the new Zealanders, who were intoxicated with excitement, and the blood-curdling war-cry made one think that these men, who were so well-built, had only the intelligence and instincts of beasts. But even the beast instincts would have taught them to protect and not injure the opposite sex. The mad rush was to the I.L.P. rooms. I saw these men come back a sweating, dishevelled mob, with the 'flappers' clinging to them. Their heroic conduct was to stop a few peace-loving citizens from holding a meeting. The glory they gained and the victory they won was the overcoming and injuring of a few men, theodds being greatly with the soldiers. Before a man can defend his country's honour honourably, he ought to look after his own.
