THE PEACE CRUSADE IN OLDHAM - NEWSPAPER LETTERS
OLDHAM CHRONICLE
8th August 1917 (Wednesday)
THE PEACE MEETING
Sir, I notice a letter in your paper from 'E.Q.' protesting against the conduct of the Anzacs in their war practice on Monday night. 'E.Q.' seems to forget there is a war on, and the great lesson is to kill. Millions have been killed so why bother about a few peace-loving citizens being hurt a bit? The Anzacs of Oldham will suit me, for you know in war the brute instinct must come on top.A man is no soldier if he does not desire to see blood. Might is right; this war will prove it., for the mightiest side will win. It is one of the maxims of all army training books that in case of necessity citizens may be terrorised with a bit of blood spilling, and if I could have the Anzacs of Oldham with me I would find them work to their desire, and probably a few peaceable women and children to practice on.
Yours etc.,
KAISER WILHELM
