CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION IN WW1

Sidney Davies

Chadderton Tribunal 7 July 1916
Reported Oldham Standard 8 July 1916

At Chadderton Tribunal yesterday …

Sidney Davies (29) married, 52 Milne-street, Chadderton, a commercial traveller, asked for exemption from combatant service. Being a servant of Jesus, it would be contrary to his faith to take human life, as his conscience was totally opposed to warfare. He was willing to take up ambulance work or serve the country in any form where there would be no motive of taking life. He desired to serve in the R A M C believing it was Christian to help the wounded and he would have been in that corps if he had been sure he would not be transferred to a combatant unit.

Sent to non-combatant corps with a recommendation for the R A M C.
